The Rockwood Court Apartments Named to
National Register of Historic Places

January 1, 2006

The Rockwood Retirement Community (formerly the Rockwood Court Apartments) is pleased to announce its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

Renovation of the Tudor Revival building by Altman-Charter began in the fall of 2005 and is scheduled for reopening as an independent senior living community this October.
Lamar Ochs, President of the Rockwood Court Partnership, which owns this building, expressed his gratitude to the City of Webster Groves and Karen Bode Baxter, Preservation Specialist, for their assistance in the nomination process. “Without the City’s support, we would not be celebrating this achievement,” said Ochs.

When the Rockwood’s 29 apartment homes reopen this fall, residents will find outstanding amenities including hardwood floors throughout, updated kitchens with stainless steel appliances, new designer cabinetry and solid surface countertops. Bathrooms have ceramic tile, pedestal sinks and step-in showers.

Adding to the historic charm of the Rockwood’s one and two bedroom apartment homes (ranging in size 515 sq. ft. to 1200 sq. ft.) are today’s comforts including emergency response system, individually controlled heat and central air conditioning, smoke detectors, fire sprinkler system and reserved on-site or underground parking.

English country décor enhances the romantic Tudor style of the commons areas which include the Thistle Tea Room (for Resident Dining), Grand Lobby and Gentles Club Room, Swon Fitness Area and the Bristol Special Events and, Media Room. Heirloom gardens and the historic elevated patio grace the outdoor vistas. A new addition to the existing building designed by St. Louis Design Alliance includes an easy access entry and will house the dining room and kitchen.

Betty Ette, Senior Vice President of The Stratford Companies, Manager of the Community, says, “The Rockwood is for those age 62 and over who want an active lifestyle (without the worries of home maintenance) in a neighborhood they love.” Located at 330 West Lockwood at Rock Hill, The Rockwood is steps away from shopping and the sidewalk cafés of Historic Old Webster.

Personal tours of the three model apartments are available by appointment.
